In continuation of my despatch No. 72 of the 11th

instant, I have the honour to enclose cop, and translation

of a proclamation by the Viceroy in which is Excellency

accordance with Treaty provisions, and warns the repayors

and others against indulging in unjustifiable critici ms

of my conduct in this affair.

In a des atch copy and translation of which I have

the honour to enclose, the Viceroy informs me that he has

requested the Portuguese fonsul to try the case in con-

junction with the Chinese Authorities and is Excellency

expresses his appreciation of my offer of co-operation.
